What is the difference between chinos and trousers?

The distinctions between chino pants and men’s trousers can be quite subtle to the untrained observer. If you placed them side by side, they would look quite similar. Additionally, both chino pants and men’s trousers share the same history. Both chinos and trousers rose in popularity amongst the British and American armies. However, each was worn for specific occasions. But there are rules for knowing when to wear chinos and when to wear trousers; the main distinction is that men’s trousers are meant to be more formal than chino pants.

Chino pants are considered a smart choice for casual occasions. With its original khaki colour and durable cotton twill fabric, chinos are a must-have for every man’s wardrobe. Chinos have evolved to include several colours, cuts, and styles.

When choosing a pair of chinos, make sure they fit properly. Unlike formal men’s trousers, chino pants have a mid-rise waist. This means they sit a bit lower on your hips than traditional trousers. They are commonly cut in a slim-fit shape but can also have a skinny, straight, or tapered fit. There are no hard-and-fast rules about the length, either; while most styles fall at the ankles, you can buy them longer and then roll them up at the bottoms. Which style you choose depends on your personal preference.

Men’s trousers are suitable for formal events but can also be worn casually. Pair them with men’s shirts or polos to finish off the look. If you are going for a formal style, consider some knitwear and a men’s jacket to finish off the look. A tie or woven waist belt can also help dress up your trousers a bit more.

Men must be a bit more conscious of their footwear with trousers. You will want to select a pair of men’s shoes that complement the entire outfit. Lace-up leather boots and leather penny loafers pair well with trousers.

What are the different styles of men’s pants?

From men’s jeans and chino pants to men’s trousers and joggers, there is a style of men’s pants for every mood or occasion. Here are some of the most popular styles of men’s pants and tips for how to wear each of them.

  • Men’s jeans This is a men’s wardrobe staple that never goes out of style. Jeans come with a straight or relaxed cut and are generally form-fitting. If you prefer your men’s jeans a little looser, most brands are now using stretchy denim material to accommodate. A top-quality pair of men’s jeans pair well with just about every other piece of clothing. Polo shirts and T-shirts with a men’s blazer can turn any pair of jeans into a fun ensemble. Toss in a beanie or a linen hat to top off the look.
  • Chino pants — Chinos are an all-time favourite of many men for their versatility. Made of lightweight material, they are both comfortable and stylish. Chinos are ideal for outdoor activities or on warm days. You can pair them with accessories you already own or choose items from any of our available collections.
  • Men’s trousers — From drawstring trousers to slim-fit and wool trousers, there is a cut and style of men’s trousers for just about any formal occasion. Pair them with one of our dress shirts and some knitwear to finish off the look.
  • Men’s dress pants — Business professionals have more than a few pairs of men’s dress pants in their robes. Every man should own at least one pair of quality dress pants. Match them with a blazer and some knitwear for a more business-casual look or a nice jacket to keep it more formal.

What is the difference between pants and trousers?

It is all in the name when it comes to the difference between pants and trousers. One is very general, whilst the other is quite specific. “Pants” is a term that can apply to any outer garment that covers each leg separately and extends from the waist to the ankle.

Trousers, by contrast, are a specific type of men’s pants. What distinguishes trousers from other kinds of pants is that they are tailored to fit and primarily are used for more formal occasions.

Is there a difference between suit pants and dress pants?

Whilst it may seem like splitting hairs, there is a difference between suit pants and dress pants. Suit pants are trousers that are worn with a formal suit jacket. Suit pants generally come with a matching jacket and the two clothing items are to be worn together. Combine them with a formal dress shirt and tie and a pair of leather boots or derby shoes. It is generally frowned upon to split up the matching suit jacket and pants and wear them with another style of jacket or pants.

Dress pants require a little more explanation. They consist of any tailored trouser and are appropriate for formal occasions or professional wear. Dress pants commonly are made from wool or polyester material. They can be paired with formal or casual shirts, knitwear, and a variety of men’s jackets.

What kind of pants are in style this year?

Men’s jeans and chino pants are never out of style. Keeping a few pairs of each in your wardrobe is a smart way to be fashionable and frugal. Some of the other current hot trends for men’s pants include:

  • Relaxed tailoring — Breezy silhouettes began outpacing form-fitting cuts in 2020 and the trend is continuing. Relaxed cuts are very flattering when tailored correctly. Pair them with knitwear and a smart blazer or suit jacket to finish off the look.
  • Mid-wash denim — When we mentioned men’s jeans are a wardrobe staple, we were referring to the classic dark or raw denim look. Going a few shades lighter to achieve a happy medium is back in style. Give it a try to mix things up a bit.
  • Covered ankles — Bare ankles were all the rage for a period, but the time for this trend is quickly passing. Keep naked ankles to the summer months and make sure your trousers are topped off by a coordinating pair of socks.
