Marilyn Monroe popularised the look and Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake relegated it to the fashion crime list with their 00s take on head to toe denim. Yet double denim has been making a comeback, with the trend set to continue into 2014. The simple truth is that getting the double look wrong is very easy, yet get it right and you?ve got casual chic down pat. Here are a few guidelines to help you out:
For the guys
If you are worried about the risk involved with double denim, we?ve got a good starting point for you. Wear your black denim jeans with a plain white tee and a blue denim jacket. You?ve plenty of contrast in there to avoid looking too matchy-matchy, and the look is subtle. Guys can also get in on the dip dye trend when tackling double denim. Pair some skinny or slim fit jeans with a dip dye shirt. Be careful not to wear a similar shade of denim for your pants as on the bottom of your shirt - you want some contrast. It?s best to keep your darker hue of denim for your pants, as this is more slimming.
For the ladies
A chambray shirt loosely tucked into a pair of skinny jeans is a perfect combination for the double denim look. Keep the shirt in a light denim wash and go for a darker colour for your jeans like stonewash or dark blue. Another way to match denims is with a dress and jacket. Go with a dress that falls above the knee like a shirt dress style. Add a jacket in a slightly contrasting shade and some cute boots to complete the ensemble. If you feel that all that denim is quite heavy and masculine, incorporate accessories that are delicate and feminine. Go with a thin strap across the body bag to subtly break up all the blue, or wear a bracelet or two.
