2017 Style Trends for Men & Women

oxford1Whether you?re a guy or a gal, you may be wondering what?s the best way to look on-trend in 2017. Here?s our quick look at what to expect in the style stakes this year, with our 2017 fashion predictions for men and women.

2017 fashion trends for women

In the pink

Whether you?re male or female, one colour on the radar for 2017 is pink. From powder pink pastels to bubblegum pink, this is the colour that?s going to show that you?ve got your finger on the fashion pulse.

An 80s revival

While we?re not seeing a return to the Madonna-esque outfits of the 80s, get ready to embrace the power shoulder once again. Balenciaga and Celine sent models down the catwalk wearing peaked shoulder pads with mini skirts and cropped trousers, so expect watered down versions in the shops. There?s also a bit of a punk revival going on, with ?bovver boots? being teamed with pretty floral dresses.

Statement sleeves

2017 the year of the statement sleeve. Some fashion designers have given a nod to the Elizabethan age via puffed up silhouettes. Some have added an extra couple of inches onto the length, so that they extend beyond the fingers. Others, like Michael Kors, have showed off sleeves that had been shredded and closed up with studs. However you choose to rock yours, make your sleeves shine this year.

From boudoir to streetwear

Slinky robes and posh pyjamas are still a popular trend, and not just for the boudoir. Designers such as Burberry and Lanvin are encouraging women to take their nightwear out of the bedroom and into the street for a fun but sensual look.

The bralette and bustier is back

After seasons of voluminous shapes, designers have once again embraced the feminine figure. Sculptural bra-tops are everywhere, peeping out from oversized velvet blazers, together with boned bustiers. If you don?t feel comfortable wearing a bustier alone, team a bustier-style top over a fitted shirt, or a bustier shirt with a loose skirt. Look out for wide waist belts to create that perfect hourglass silhouette.

Super stripes

Stripes never seem to go out of fashion, and this year is no exception. To get a more modern vibe, mix your stripe patterns, and wear different sized stripes or different colours together.

Dresses over pants

This may not be a brand-new trend, but it?s a great way to modernise your existing wardrobe staples. Pair sweatshirt dresses over wide leg pants, or a simple shift over colour-blocked trousers.

A new take on shirts

While every woman should have a simple button-down in her wardrobe, if you want to be bang up to date, add a one-shouldered shirtdress or a wrap shirt for instant style.

Wear your heart on your chest

We?ve all heard of wearing your heart on your sleeve, but this year, designers are encouraging us to wear hearts just about everywhere. From heart-shaped dress bodices, to heart-shaped cutouts and heart-shaped motifs, love is definitely in the air this year.

2017 fashion trends for men

Performance, comfort and style

2017 sees an explosion of traditional utility dressing that?s been brought right up to date for the new season. Performance jackets, combat trousers and zips abound, while suits are cut with larger silhouettes and wider trousers to offer a more relaxed experience. Technical tailoring and innovative fabrics will ensure that styles are functional, fit-for-purpose and, most importantly, comfortable. Wear with minimalist trainers to complete the look.

The classics are back

Casual wear will see the reinvention of classic shapes, such as the Harrington jacket. These will be given a contemporary upgrade in terms of styling, fabric and colourways. There will also be a move away from colour blocking to more subtle patterns, and blocking based on fabric texture rather than colour. Expect knitted and jersey outerwear combined with nylon and lightweight jackets that can be easily layered. The overshirt, in a military or utilitarian style, will also make a welcome reappearance, and is a great investment piece.

Yellow and pink making a comeback

While pink is set to be a big trend for 2017, yellow is also a key colour for men who like to stay ahead of the fashion game. Look for clothing in subdued yellows rather than canary yellow, and pair your pink and yellow clothing with worn indigo jeans and a pair of Converse for a dressed down vibe.

The bum-bag makes a reappearance

As women?s fashion is reverting to styles from the 1980s, men?s fashion is following suit. Are you brave enough to don a bum-bag? If not, bag a stylish leather backpack instead.

?70s style

If the 80s wasn?t your era, never fear - the seventies is also making a comeback. Go for rich colour palettes, with everything from rusty brown to rich amber orange. Loose fitting button downs, and even hints of suede and velvet are all a part of this trend.
